Owambe parties can maintain strictly by invitation status with access codes
“Owambe” is a Yoruba word which when translated to English means “It is there.” Whenever you hear Nigerians talk about “Owambe,” it’s about party-ing, loud music, food (Jollof rice and Amala/Akpu especially) and most of all, wearing uniform clothings – either ankara, lace aka Asoebi.
Owambe is a party where you definitely must see someone who is related to your family — there, you see your uncle, aunties and others that you haven’t seen in a long time and sometimes, you haven’t seen them in your entire life.
Owambe parties always fall on weekends (Saturdays especially). Nowadays, no weekend in Nigeria is complete without an Owambe party. This is a lavish and flamboyant party where most people showoff their wealth.
But Owambe's are usually plagued by the hydra headed monster of unwanted guests that are called gate crashers in contemporary english while the local Yoruba lingua they are referred to the "Mogbo Moya's" which simply means the "The heard , the branched" wuch in the literary sense that is exactly that these gate crashers do.
There are usually 3 to 4 catergories of gate crashers .
1. The moderate gate crashers which usually comprises of mainly youngters between the age bracket of 20 - 29 years who are of the higher insitution age bracket just looking for where to have a party, socialize, have a nice time and obviously eat.
2. The unsolicited business hustlers and traders such as free lance photographers and minted or crisp naira note traders for "owambe money spraying"
3. The last category are the real fears of most high level party hosts and organizers, these are the touts and area boys that literarily turn your event venue to a money soliciting and hailing spot.
